the walkman

Posted by: divasoria on: July 1, 2009

MJ’s death made me think about my childhood and how music played a big part in it. and the reason? the walkman and MTV. and i’d like to thank my parents for getting me my very first walkman.

my dad and mom got me a walkman during their visit to japan in the early 80s. i believe i was 6, i never really asked for one but my brother did. so my folks thought they had to get me one as well so that i won’t get jealous. a common philosophy shared by a lot of parents, i think. i got a lot of stuff that i thought i didn’t want through that kind of thinking – my first tv in my room, my first expensive watch, my first bass weejuns. i’m not complaining.

ANYWAY, i loved that walkman. i bought tape cassettes like crazy. i would even record songs that i liked from the radio since a lot of stuff weren’t available so easily in manila stores back then. unlike today where you can just download from the itunes store or limewire, we had to wait for songs to be played on the radio. wow, huh?

i listened to my walkman everywhere and all the time. madonna, cyndi lauper, michael jackson, wham!, the bangles, the go-gos, whitney houston, bananarama, duran duran, menudo – oh my. that was the soundtrack of my life. my mom actually made me take voice lessons because she heard me sing “like a virgin” one time with my walkman on. and not only did she think the song was outrageous, she also thought i had an awful voice. hehehe.

which leads me to another childhood favorite, prince. as obscure and weird as prince can get, i loved him. i loved raspberry beret. i never really thought much about the lyrics, who did at 7 or 8? i only found out a couple of years ago that it was about sex. amazing that my favorite songs as a child – like a virgin and raspberry beret were all about somebody’s first sexual experience. wow.

anyway, my favorite thing about rasberry beret was the video.

and i still know those dance steps. hahahaha!

mortality

honestly, i never thought i’d get this affected by michael jackson’s death. i grew up in the 80’s and was weaned on MTV and music. michael jackson and madonna were part of everybody’s childhood in the 80s. i used to wake up on sunday mornings to watch the one video show on tv, video hit parade. it showed all these western music videos – it was the most fascinating thing on tv. visuals to go with the music, how innovative! i remember every single michael jackson video and my very first cassette was thriller. i got it from the record section of unimart.

i used to get really scared whenever the video of thriller was on. very traumatic for a child to see zombies dance. i also hate the part when michael turns to his date and he turns into a werewolf. i used to also watch re-runs of the jackson 5 cartoons on tv. during the summer time spent in the states, my cousins and i would dress and dance like michael and madonna. i also remember begging my mom to watch Captain EO, MJ’s sci-fii 3D movie shown in disney theme parks in the late 80s. michael jackson was part of the cultural fabric of my generation.

while driving to the gym yesterday, i was listening to jackson 5’s “i’ll be there” and i started to cry. it felt like a part of my youth died with michael jackson. it makes you more aware of your mortality and how fleeting life is. i felt not as invincible as i was when i was 6 years old dancing to billie jean.

what makes the feeling sadder is that everybody knew michael was a tortured soul. he was abused physically, emotionally and mentally. but in his death, his musical genius and legacy are remembered. and that’s the most important thing.

and considering this was just michael jackson. i am warning you guys, if and when something happens to madonna, i will be inconsolable for at least a week. somebody needs to check up on me every hour.

NYC Prep – the real GG?

Posted by: divasoria on: June 25, 2009

oh you know it, i am SO ALL OVER NYC PREP. not even funny. saw the first episode @ cecile’s last monday. and ZOMG, it’s pure trash.

the show is touted to be the real life GG – following around six UES “private” school kids. i say air quote-private-air quote because one of the girls go to stuyvesant and FYI, stuyvesant is like the pisay of NYC -sure pisay was patterned after bronx science but stuyvesant is just way cooler and you know pisay people are way cooler than masci or qsci peeps combined! LOL.

but i digress, going back to NYC prep. first off, the cast is sketchy. sure, they’re supposed to be friends with ally zarin, the kid of jill of RHWNYC, but they’re not..uhmm..cute. compared to the cast of GG, i don’t know. far from GG. sebastian, the supposed casanova, reminds of a fug shawn cassidy. the flippy hair gives me the hibbyjibbies. the brunette girls are ok, at best. jessie though is not serena van der woodsen, to say the least. and the clothes? they obviously need stylists! and the whole group reminds of our own helium club. insult or praise? you be the judge.

so i guess real life doesn’t translate to beautiful as the reel life version?

also good to know that my other favorite blogs – daily intel and nytimes.com’s the moment are also into this trashy show. you can bet your bottom dollar we’re going to download that crap the whole frikkin season. hahaha!

fatal attraction

FatalAttraction

i guess everybody has heard by now about the blog (well, now deleted blog) – donottrustmarcabaya.blogspot.com. i wasn’t supposed to talk about it but looking at my WP stats got my blogging interest piqued.

WP

i suppose these search words were all pertaining to multiple tweets about the said subject and this got me thinking, what makes a woman turn into a psycho bitch ala glenn close in fatal attraction? as chuvaness has said in her blog – hell hath no fury. women, believe me, are the most vicious and competitive bunch. myself included.

women would like to believe that they’re always in control, maybe it’s the hormones or something but women turn into obsessive and overbearing bitches. (again. myself included.)

we have this constant need to know where our paramour is or what he’s doing or why he hasn’t texted/called/emailed us for three weeks. it just takes a lot of self awareness and self control to keep it under wraps and under control.

so how do we deal with the crazies? you are allowed to do the following:

1. cyber-stalking – go wild with google and facebook. it’s perfectly fine, we all go through that phase.
2. drive by his house BUT NOT GO DOWN THE CAR AND RING THE DOORBELL – yes, i’ve done this before but the difference between me and some other girls, i NEVER go down and ring the doorbell. LOL.
3. drink with your girlfriends and gays – yes, perfectly fine to drink loads of vodka and wail your heartaches. just don’t embarrass yourself.
4. retail therapy – go buy that balenciaga work with silver giant hardware. because you want it and because you can!
5. work out and diet – there’s nothing better than to parade in front of your ex-lover and say(not out loud of course) – “hunny, you wish you still had me!”.

so to maegan and all women scorned by douche bags, move on! keep your sanity intact!

life is too short.

fall into the gap

i love love the gap!some say it’s boring, but there’s something so comforting when you wear basics. they make the best tees and the best khakis. my favorites are their boyfriend khakis and pima cotton vnecks. and i’m also excited about their design editions. they’ve been doing it for a couple years with philip lim, etc. i have a basic white shirt from last year’s collection which i got here! (tin of MFO was supposed to get it for me, but i was surprised to see them at the gap glorietta).

this year, the designers of vena cava, alexander wang and albertus swanepoel will be designing pieces for an all-khaki collection. my faves? shorts and motorcycle jacket from alexander wang and the dresses from vena cava.

NIN

Posted by: divasoria on: June 15, 2009

i know it’s hard to imagine how much of a rocker i was in high school but i was, at one point, obsessed with nine inch nails. NIN was such a guy’s band. their music was dark, loud and evil. perfect music to listen to when you’re pissed off at your parents and sneaked in cigarettes in your bathroom. NIN music was to be played loud and behind locked doors. and OMG, the frontman trent reznor. SO HOT. like in a dark brooding, soulful kind of way. like he’s the type of guy you’re parents will freak out when you bring him home. so anti-catholic school girl.(and incidentally, trent is engaged to a pinay. pinay pride!)

again, don’t shoot me. it was the 90s. 90s chicks like myself are obsessed with the artist/musician/writer/slacker angst-sy guy prototype. there was something about their puppy dog eyes and their copious amount of self-hate/loathing that make us think we can save them from their misery and we can ultimately make them happy. you know, like winona ryder trying to save ethan hawke from self destruction in reality bites or when bridget fonda was making all those excuses for matt dillon in singles. such a cliche, but girls like me were sadly weaned into relationships based on those movies.

anyway – all i just wanted to say is that i want to watch trent reznor and nine inch nails in concert on august 5th. it sounds like it’s 1994 – actually we’re already in 2009. but it’s great to reminisce and i might just bring out the doc martens for a spin that one night. but i got to remind myself, that’s on a wednesday night and unfortunately, i have a day job to attend to the next day.
